Abbey House Museum
Step back in time as the LVI team open the doors to the historic past & wander through the enchanting streets, shops and houses to experience life as a Victorian in Leeds.

Abbey House Museum in Leeds was originally the inner gatehouse for Kirkstall Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery founded by monks from Fountains Abbey. The museum shows what life was like in Victorian Leeds, with beautifully-recreated street scenes. Step into a 19th-century house, shop, and pub, and see what life was like for 19th-century children in the Childhood Galleries.

Kirkstall Abbey was founded as a daughter house of Fountains Abbey in 1147. Twelve monks and an abbot from Fountains established an abbey at Barnoldswick, near Skipton. After 5 years at Barnoldswick the monks moved to a new site at Kirkstall, on the River Aire.

Kirkstall Abbey lasted until it was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1539. The gatehouse had its arched entrance passage blocked at both ends so that it could be transformed into a residence.
The realistic Victorian streets include Stephen Harding Gate, the 19th century equivalent of a modern high street. You can also visit a traditional Victorian drinking house called Hark to Rover Inn which includes activity of doors closing on there own, objects moving & a constant feeling of being watched.
Explore the poorer residential district of Abbey Fold, which looks at life and death in Victorian times & a foreboding feeling of its energy from this time How does the warm comfortable home of the successful pawnbroker compare to the chilly premises of the poor undertakers, well staff have reported activity in both areas, will you??
Moving upstairs into the Childhood Galleries in the museum, this area has a sinister, eerie feeling with children's laughter heard aswell as a constant menacing spirit that likes to touch & push guest's and staff. The fascinating range of toys, games and 19th century dolls on display make this area an full of energy & activity.
