Join the Lone Vigils Investigation team as we explore the oldest, purpose built prison in England. The Grade 1 listed Old Gaol, was opened in 1333 with 4 floors built and was used up until the 1820's to house criminals and murderers.
Prisioners that were held at the Old Gaol were submitted to horrible conditions, living in their own faeces and were made to even pay for their food, drink, clothing and bedding whilst being held there. The Arch Bishop of York built this Gaol who then ruled over the local area, which was once known as Hexhamshire. Due to the Church not agreeing with the death penalty, the guilty parties after their trials would be fined or punished in Hexham Market Place.
Due to the proximity of the Scottish Boarders, many local families from both North and South of the Boarder, were brought here to suffer in the Tudor times, with even the bubonic plauge, striking this opposing stonebuilding and killing many of the prisoners back in the 1550's.
Also In 1761 the violent Hexham riot took place in the market place, which took over 50 lives and many of the perpetrators found themselves being housed in the Gaol itself.

With 4 floors to explore and the emotions and energy of what went on in this building, no wonder a plethora of activity has been reported by staff and visitors alike, including, a feeling of unease, recordings of possible apparisions, trigger objects being moved by unseen hands, even clinks of chains being distinctly heard when noone else was in the building. Along with long audible groaning voices, could this be the many prisioners who were once housed in this forboding stone building built 700 years ago.
