Situated on the site of the former RAF Usworth/Sunderland airport.
It opened in 1916, by 1939 it had a runway and resident fighter squad. After being under attack in 1940, the next 2 years fighters spent a lot of time fighting off the German night raids.
During WW2 it was home to 607 squadrons. After the war it was converted to a training base and became a civil airfield.
1962 the airfield closed.
NELSAM holds the largest collection between Yorkshire and Scotland of aviation history with over 30 aircraft on display, along with a wide collection of aero engines, weaponry and vehicles.
NELSAM is steeped with history it’s no wonder it’s rife with paranormal activity.
